POPPIES FOR OUR VETRANS

The Poppy Project was initiated by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 605, St. George, Ontario to commemorate the 150th
Anniversary of Canada and to honour the citizens of St. George and district who paid the
ultimate sacrifice, 1867 - 2017.

The Legion approached Donn Zver Pottery to produce the 100 Poppies for a Commemorative Garden at the Legion Branch in St. George.
This Project inspired so many people and now hundreds of these

Poppies are being made by
Donn Zver, Tammera Hunter Clark and Nancy Redwood at the Pottery in Troy.

The Poppies can be placed in your garden so that you too can share in the memories of a loved one who may have fought in the Wars for our Nation.

The Poppies can be purchased at our studio in Troy for $50.00 plus HST. $25.00 of the sale of each Poppy goes to the St. George Legion
to help them continue their fine work in our Community.

HOW THE POPPIES ARE MADE

A die was made to form the 2 parts of the Poppy and are cut out on the slab roller and are cleaned and prepared for assembly.

The pieces are assembled and the petals are formed which gives the Poppy its shape.

The Poppies are left to dry for up to a week to ensure that there is no water left in the clay before the first firing.

About 70 poppies are produced a day and dried on the ware racks waiting for the first firing.

After the first firing the Poppies are glazed and fired in the large gas kiln for the final firing. The Poppies are fired to 2400F.

Here I am with my assistant Nancy Redwood after a firing of the Poppies. Enjoying the moment.

The Poppies are checked and ready for the assembly of the rods onto the Poppies.

Once the Poppies are assembled
they are put on display in the
gardens of the Pottery.
